On Nov. 17, 2016, a breakthrough in genetically modified plant production is announced. Decades ago, researchers at the University of Illinois successfully tinkered with the process of photosynthesis, increasing the productivity of a plant. The idea was largely ignored by the scientific community and funding sources; however, more recent investment by the Bill and Melinda Foundation with the goal of alleviating global poverty, results in the current announcement: by alternating the photosynthesis process, plants are 20% more productive. Tobacco plants are the focus of the experiment, but researchers intend to use the discovery for food crops.
