On Nov. 7, 2016, researchers from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine announce that they have discovered one antibody, out of 29 investigated, that neutralizes five strains of Zika. The researchers were looking into the antibodies of those who have recently recovered from the Zika virus when they discovered the antibody. Testing on mice reveal results that show significantly lower levels of the Zika virus in both the host and in their fetuses and placentas. The mice with Zika who do not receive the antibody show placental damage. Some human trials have begun and researcher are confident that this discovery will lead to a treatment and vaccine in the future.
