Liberation of Mosul Begins

On Oct. 17, 2016, the Iraqi government launches an offensive strategy to take back the city of Mosul, which is the last major city in Iraq that is under the Islamic State's control. The city of 1.5 million people was taken two years ago by ISIS when the caliphate was declared. The offensive, launched by Iraq and backed by the United States, starts early Monday when 30,000 Iraqi and Kurdish forces combined with Sunni tribal fighters advance into the villages surrounding Mosul. The U.S. leads an air campaign to aid in the destruction of Islamic State infrastructure within the city. The Pentagon announces that by the end of Monday the offensive is ahead of schedule, but that approximately 4,000 to 8,000 ISIS members remain in Mosul.
