Philippine President Duterte Separates from U.S., Aligns with China

On Oct. 20, 2016, the president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, announces his "separation" from the United States—politically, economically, and militarily. Duterte makes the announcement in a speech in Beijing to over 200 Chinese and Philippine businesspeople, as well as the Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli. The president plans to sign $13.5 billion in deals while he is in China.
