It’s been a busy week, from Cuba claiming the US is trying to exclude it from the upcoming summit, to the US Vice President testing positive for Covid-19. Who has time to keep track of it all? That’s why we’ve boiled it all down to our top five stories of the week.

 

1. Cuba claims The US Is Trying To Exclude It From The Upcoming Summit

On Monday, Bruno Rodriguez, the Cuban Prime minister has claimed in a series of accusations that the United States is seeking to exclude the country from an upcoming national summit of regional leaders, which would be a major setback in the relationship between the two countries considering the two nations just held their first high-level talks in four years two days ago. He stated this in a series of tweets where he said the United States was putting pressure on regional governments to block Cuba’s participation in the Ninth summit of the Americas in June, in Los Angeles, California.

2. Gas Supplies To Poland And Bulgaria To Be Cut Off By Russia

The news that the supply of Russian gas to Poland has been stopped is yet to be confirmed by the  Russian energy giant, Gazprom, the nation's news agency TASS reported on Tuesday, citing the company's spokesperson Sergey Kupriyanov who emphasized, however, that Poland must pay for Russian gas supplies in rubles, a demand Warsaw has refused.

3. Mass Funeral For Flood Victims Requested By Councilor

According to Nonhlanhla Khoza, a KZN flood victim, over 60 homes were completely washed away, leaving a significant number of people homeless. She stated that about 196 survivors from  Nazareth would be granted R1 980 once-off food vouchers, and added that social workers would be present to help survivors working through their struggles, as reported by Times Live. The local ward councilor has called for a mass funeral to honor the deceased.

4. Three-Month-Old Kidnapped Monday In San Jose, California, Has Been Found By Authorities

The kidnapped baby was found on Tuesday and the police took to Twitter to state that: “baby Brandon has been located. He will be taken to a local hospital for an evaluation; three suspects have been taken into custody, charges and additional information forthcoming. We thank all who helped.” The identities of the suspects have not been released to the public. The police however added that “we have some of the finest detectives in the nation working on this case, nobody went home yesterday and in less than 24 hours, he was found.  Thank you FBI, we appreciate all the help.”

5. US Vice President Tests Positive For Covid-19

After returning from a weeklong trip to California, the vice president of the United States, Kamala Harris, tested positive for coronavirus on Tuesday.  Kristen Allen, the vice president’s press secretary stated in an earlier statement that Harris tested positive for Covid on both rapid and PCR tests and that Harris would go into isolation and continue to work from the vice president’s residence. Harris made an announcement herself on Twitter where she said “Today I tested positive for Covid-19. I have no symptoms, and I will continue to isolate and follow the guidelines from CDC.”
