Flash Flood Displaces Elephant From Sanctuary In Thailand
Friday, October 4, 2024 – A dramatic video and photographs from the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai showed hundreds of elephants wading through belly-deep water to reach refuge on higher land as Flash floods surged into a renowned elephant sanctuary in northern Thailand on Thursday, forcing the evacuation of nearly 100 elephants and trapping hundreds of visitors, prompting an urgent need for assistance.
Authorities in Chiang Mai, a major tourist destination in Thailand, have issued flood warnings as water levels along the Ping River, which flows through the city, approach unsafe levels; with considerable flooding around the park and levels still rising, the sanctuary's creator said that they are facing the disagreeable possibility of having to evacuate the animals for the second time.
Many of the elephants are blind or have physical problems, limiting their ability to flee and complicating rescue operations. The park also houses over 5,000 rescued animals, some of whom were relocated in recent days when officials issued a flood warning.

Florida Begins Damage Assessment Following Devastation Of Hurricane Milton
Thursday, October 10, 2024 – The death toll from Hurricane Milton climbed to at least ten on Thursday as Florida assessed the devastation from the category 3 storm, which wreaked massive property damage throughout the state and left more than 3.5 million homes and businesses without electricity.
Early estimates stated that over 125 residences had been damaged, many of them were mobile homes in senior communities. Inland, some 11 million people were at danger of flash and river floods after certain areas of the state got one-in-1,000-year rainfall, more than 60% of the city was without power.
Rescue efforts continued into Thursday afternoon, authorities have already rescued at least 340 people and 49 dogs, including a 14-year-old kid discovered floating on a piece of fence amid floods. A US Shore Guard team rescued a guy who was clinging to an ice chest in the Gulf of Mexico, around 30 miles (50 km) off the shore, when his boat broke down before Milton reached landfall.
