Executive Chairman Leaves Starbucks
On June 4, Howard Schultz, executive chairman of Starbucks, announced he would be leaving after 36 years. The reason for his departure is unknown at this time. (BBC)

Swimsuit Competition Dropped from Miss America
On June 5, it was announced that the swimsuit competition would be dropped from Miss America. The competition’s chairwoman, Gretchen Carlson, stated that Miss America will “no longer judge [its] candidates on outward appearance.” (CNN)

Washington Capitals Win Stanley Cup
On June 7, the Washington Capitals took home the Stanley Cup after defeating the Las Vegas Golden Knights. Thousands of fans poured onto the streets to celebrate the victory. (Reuters)

Salmonella Outbreak in Cut-Fruit
On June 11, the CDC warned residents of eight US states that pre-cut melon has been linked to a Salmonella outbreak. So far, 60 cases have been reported, but there have not been any deaths. (Reuters)

Hostage Situation Turns Deadly
On June 12, a hostage situation in Orlando turned deadly when a man barricaded himself in an apartment with four children. Both the gunman and all four children died. Investigations are ongoing. (CNN)

California to Vote on Splitting the State
On June 13, a bill to separate California into three different states will be on November’s ballot. It is the first time in 150 years such a choice will be on the bill. (CNN)

Dozens of Immigrants Found in Apartment
On June 14, acting on a tip, Border Patrol agents raided a two-bedroom house in Texas. Inside, they found 62 undocumented immigrants with limited food and water. (CNN)
President Trump Places Tariff on Chinese Goods
On June 15, it was announced that President Trump will impose a 25% tariff on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods. The tariffs are an attempt to keep jobs in America. (BBC)

Pipeline Catches Fire in Kansas
On June 15, a natural gas pipeline in Kansas caught fire. No injuries have been reported, and the impact is being assessed. (Reuters)

Manafort Sent to Jail
On June 15, a judge sent President Trump’s ex-campaign manager to jail to await his pending charges. Paul Manafort has been charged with witness tampering. (Reuters)

Shooting in New Jersey
On June 17, a shooting at a New Jersey art festival left twenty people injured and one of the suspects dead. The other suspect has been taken into custody. (CNN)

US Quits UN Human Rights Council
On June 19, the US pulled out of the United Nations Human Rights Council, stating that the organization “makes a mockery of human rights.” The US has always had a conflicting relationship with the organization. (BBC)

US Border Crisis
On June 20, Republicans continue to scramble to pass a bill that addresses the issue of separating migrant families at the US-Mexico Border. The separations have resulted in much outcry from the US citizens, but President Trump believes the separations are necessary to stop illegal border crossings. He has also stated that he will back whatever legislation is passed. (BBC)

Washington Zoo Panda May be Pregnant
On June 25, it was announced that the giant panda Mei Xiang may be pregnant. Giant pandas are a vulnerable species, and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoo is hoping for a positive test. (Reuters)

Blast at Texas Hospital
On June 26, a blast at a Texas hospital left four people injured. The explosion is still under investigation, but is thought to be caused by a nearby construction site. (Reuters)
Justice Kennedy to Retire
On June 27, Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his plans to retire on July 31. His retirement gives President Trump a chance to appoint a conservative to the Supreme Court. (Reuters)

Shooting in Annapolis
On June 29, a shooter opened fire at Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland, killing five people. A suspect has been taken into custody, but no motive or identification has been made. (CNN)
