Hackers Cause Internet Outage
Image of DYN building in New Hampshire
On Oct. 21, 2016, hackers launch a massive cyberattack against the internet routing company Dyn. Dyn is a company in New Hampshire that translates domain names into IP addresses recognized by computers—basically it allows you to surf the Web. The company is under attack for 11 hours, during which time, users across the country and into Europe are intermittently blocked from accessing many popular websites including Netflix, Spotify, Tumblr and more. Dyn labels the attack as DDoS, distributed denial of service attack, in which servers are flooded with fake requests, causing real sites to stop working. Dyn says that this is not the first time this has happened but that they learn from each attack.
