Camilla Shand and cavalry officer Andrew Parker Bowles marry in July. |

Charles meets teenager Diana Spencer for the first time. |
1981 |
Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer marry at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. |

According to Charles's official biographer, Jonathan Dimbleby, Charles begins an affair with Camilla. |
1992 |
The "Camillagate" tapes—embarrassingly intimate conversations between Charles and Camilla recorded from 1989—are published in the tabloids. Later that year, the Palace officially acknowledges marital problems between Charles and Diana. Rumors of discord had been reported in the press for years. In December, the separation of Prince Charles and Diana is announced. |

Prince Charles admits to adultery in a televised interview, which he said occurred after the marriage had, "irretrievably broken down, us both having tried." In a televised interview later that year, Diana, who has also admitted to adultery, says "there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded." |
