Moses HOAGLAND, Congress, OH (1812-1865)

HOAGLAND Moses , a Representative from Ohio; born near Baltimore, Md., June 19, 1812; attended the public schools; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1842 and commenced practice in Millersburg, Ohio; served in the Mexican War and was promoted to the rank of major for bravery in action; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first Congress (March 4, 1849-March 3, 1851); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1850 to the Thirty-second Congress; resumed the practice of law; appointed associate justice for the Territory of Washington on June 21, 1853, but declined to accept; died in Millersburg, Ohio, April 16, 1865; interment in Oak Hill Cemetery.
