Joel TURRILL, Congress, NY (1794-1859)
TURRILL Joel , a Representative from New York; born in Shoreham, Vt., February 22, 1794; attended the common school; was graduated from Middlebury College in 1816; studied law in Newburgh, N.Y.; moved to Oswego, Oswego County, N.Y.; was admitted to the bar in 1819 and commenced practice in Oswego; justice of the peace; county judge 1828-1833; member of the State assembly in 1831; elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1833-March 3, 1837); was not a candidate for reelection in 1836; district attorney for Oswego County 1838-1840; surrogate of Oswego County in 1843; United States consul to the Sandwich Islands 1845-1850; died in Oswego, N.Y., December 28, 1859; interment in Riverside Cemetery.
