Charles MARSH, Congress, VT (1765-1849)

MARSH Charles , a Representative from Vermont; born in Lebanon, New London County, Conn., July 10, 1765; moved with his parents to Hartford, Conn., in 1773; educated under private tutors and was graduated from Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., in 1786; studied law in the law school of Judge Reeves at Litchfield, Conn.; was admitted to the bar in 1788 and commenced the practice of law in Woodstock, Windsor County, Vt., the same year; appointed by President Washington United States district attorney for Vermont and served from 1797 to 1801; elected as a Federalist to the Fourteenth Congress (March 4, 1815-March 3, 1817); founder of the American Colonization Society while in Washington; resumed the practice of law in Woodstock, Windsor County, Vt.; trustee of Dartmouth College 1809-1849; died in Woodstock, Vt., on January 11, 1849; interment in River Street Cemetery.
