Hissène Habré Sentenced to Life Imprisonment

On May 30, the former dictator of Chad is sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity, torture, and rape. Hissène Habré led the country from 1982–1990 and was armed by the United States, who supported him because of his opposition of Muammar Qadaffi in Libya. During his regime, he was known to have little compassion, imprisoning and torturing hundreds of people; experts estimate his human casualty count at 40,000. Habré was tried by the Extraordinary African Chambers after being in exile for 26 years; he is the first dictator to be sentenced by due process in Africa.
