Tell us about your work---what do you do? I teach mechanical engineering students at a major university and conduct research involving mechanical engineering projects . What skills are needed? You need a Ph.D. to be a professor just about anywhere. In my field, you also need a minimum of five years of industrial practice and experience . What was your major? Mechanical Engineering How did you get started in your career? I got started in my career through research and projects I was working on during my graduate school years. What experience do you need in this job? You need to have industrial experience in designing and building projects . This can be anything from boilers to bridges to dams or any large-scale industrial project. Describe your "typical" workday: I work with the students in the classroom and on research projects through the university. There is a fair amount of paperwork and meetings that I have to attend. What is the hardest aspect of your job? Probably writing grants and getting money for research projects . What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? I enjoy seeing the students learn and come into their own as scientists. There is the challenge of research projects and the satisfaction of completing a project. What are your suggestions for someone considering this field? Definitely go for it if you are interested in engineering. It is a great field to be in and very rewarding.
