Tell us about your work---what do you do? I teach and research in the field of operations research and Industrial Engineering . What skills are needed? You need to understand mathematical modeling and analysis , analytical thought process, and computer implementation. What was your major? Mathematics How did you get started in your career? I received a job offer from Georgia Tech Industrial Engineering department and have been here ever since. What experience do you need in this job? You need to thoroughly understand mathematical modeling, as well as hedging strategies against uncertainty. You must also have all the qualifications of a good teacher. Describe your "typical" workday: On any given day I can be in the classroom teaching, meeting with Ph.D. students to conduct research, writing journal papers, doing various committee work, and other teaching related duties. What is the hardest aspect of your job? By far the most difficult part of my job is securing grants for projects. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Turning out great students is the most rewarding aspect of the job. Watching students grow and develop in the classroom and turn out to be great scientists is extremely satisfying. What are your suggestions for someone considering this field? Our industrial engineering department is very broad, providing great career opportunities: production manager, marketing, financial engineering, information systems management, health care system design and management, and supply chain management to name a few.
