Tell us about your work---what do you do? I am a certified pharmacy technician and work in a large pharmacy chain. I fill prescriptions , work with insurance companies, doctors, nurses, and physician's assistants , and deal with the public . What skills are needed? Computer skills are helpful and good people skills. Drug knowledge is a plus , and a lot of training takes place on the job . What was your major? I completed a one year pharmacy training program at a technical college . How did you get started in your career? Medicine has always been an interest of mine, and I took the pharmaceutical training in order to work in this area. What experience do you need in this job? Much of the training is on the job, although official certification definitely helps with increased salaries. Describe your "typical" workday: I fill and refill nearly 150 prescriptions per day, talk on the phone with doctors, customers, and insurance companies. There is also a certain amount of paper work, filing claims, etc. What is the hardest aspect of your job? Because there is a lot of interaction with so many different parties, staying focused is a challenge . I have to be patient and understanding throughout the day to make all the pieces come together. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? I love making the impossible happen, and having friendly, happy customers. What are your suggestions for someone considering this field?
