Tell us about your work--what do you do? I respond to people who are in trouble. Sometimes I perform basic first aid , and sometimes I'm trying to save a life . What skills are needed? The ability to concentrate under pressure , communication, critical thinking , and no fear of blood ! What was your major? Emergency medicine How did you get started in your career? Desire. I wanted to learn how to help people in critical situations . Also, my mother is a registered nurse, and I have friends who are paramedics . What experience do you need in this job? EMT certification . If you are certified, most hospitals, and other places that employ EMTs, will usually provide on the job training. However, it is helpful to have had some experience in dealing with the public. Describe your "typical" workday: That's one of the things I like about my job--there is variety to it. As an EMT your day could range from something as uneventful as transporting patients from nursing homes to the hospital to helping save the life of a gun shot victim. What is the hardest aspect of your job? The hardest part is when the patient dies. It's always hard to lose a life. Another difficult part of this job is that you may receive no appreciation for what you do from patients or their families. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Saving a life. It's also rewarding when the patient is satisfied with your care . What are your suggestions for someone considering this field? Look inside yourself to figure out if this job is a good match for your skills and interests.
