Calderón Sol, Armando, 1948–2017, Salvadoran political leader, , b. San Salvador, J.D. Univ. of El Salvador, 1977. A member of the right-wing National Republican Alliance, he held several positions in the party (1981–84) and served in the Salvadoran legislature (1985–88) and as mayor of San Salvador (1988–94) before he became the first president to be elected following the end of the country's civil war (1980–92). As president (1995–99), Calderón Sol promoted the privatization of the telecomunications sector and the pension system, implemented a peace agreement with former guerrillas, and established a framework for free elections.
