Winter Storm in Eastern America
On December 3, a winter storm hit Boston and New York. The snow is expected to be about 12 inches; however, snow isn’t the only problem. Authorities warn of icy road conditions and slush. (CNN)

Volcano Erupts in New Zealand
On December 9, a volcano on New Zealand’s White Island erupted, spewing hot ash and steam near a group of tourists. Eight people are missing and presumed dead. Five people have already been confirmed dead. (CNN)

Winter Weather Alerts Affect Millions
On December 15, over 35 million people were affected by a winter weather advisory from Colorado to West Virginia. Snow, freezing rain, and heavy winds have caused many travel disruptions. (CNN)

Australia Fires Rage On
On December 21, wildfires spread across three Australian states. So far, one person has died and another is missing. Officials say the fires are becoming worse. (BBC)

Wildfires in Chile
On December 24, a wildfire spread through towns in Chile, destroying at least 200 homes. Weather and winds the next day made the fire worse as firefighters attempted to contain the blaze. (CNN)

Typhoon Phanfone Hits Philippines
On December 25, Typhoon Phanfone hit areas of the Philippines, killing at least 16 people. The typhoon also destroyed various homes and tourist destinations. (CNN)

Australia Fire Worsens
On December 31, the death toll from the wildfires in Australia rose to eight people, with two still missing. Over 200 homes have been ravaged by the fire. Not much progress has been made, but many major roads have reopened. (BBC)
