Typhoon Yagi Heads Towards The Southern Coast Of China
Friday, September 6, 2024 – One of the most severe storms on record this year is headed towards southern China, and it is likely to hit land on the famous tourist island of Hainan later today. Trains, boats, and aircraft have been stopped for the second day in the province, while schools remain closed in sections of the southern area as super typhoon Yagi approaches.
Yagi's strength has risen since wreaking devastation in the northern Philippines earlier this week. It is now generating gusts of up to 150 mph around its eye. Hainan is no stranger to typhoons. However, only nine of the 106 typhoons that hit Hainan between 1949 and 2023 were designated as super typhoons.
Yagi is forecast to make another landfall in northern Vietnam late Saturday but in a weakened form. Vietnam's deputy agricultural minister has warned that it might impact areas "critical to the socio-economic development" of the region.

Flood Destroys Housing Facilities And Amenities In A Nigerian State
Tuesday, September 10, 2024 – Floods in northern Nigeria killed more than 80% of the animals at a major zoo that housed fauna such as lions, crocodiles, buffalo, and ostriches, according to the facility.
According to the office of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, the tragedy has harmed other institutions in the state capital, Maiduguri, including a post office and a teaching hospital, and citizens have been advised to leave the worst-hit regions. The President also extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the state, particularly to the families who have lost their means of livelihood because of the disaster caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam
Floods in northeastern Nigeria killed at least 49 people this month, while a flood in 2022 killed over 600. Borno state, the origin of the Boko Haram extremist outfit, is still dealing with a 15-year conflict that has killed and displaced countless people.

Two People Missing As Flood And Storm Hit Northern Italian Region
Thursday, September 19, 2024 – Two people are missing, and over 1,000 people have been evacuated from their homes after disastrous floods and landslides struck the northern Italian province of Emilia-Romagna, sparking charges that Giorgia Meloni's far-right administration has the will to address the climate problem.
Two persons were reported missing in Traversara, a hamlet in Ravenna province when the Lamone River overflowed its banks. Schools were closed, train lines were interrupted, and landslides blocked several highways. Firefighters have conducted over 500 rescue operations in the area, including utilizing helicopters to extract individuals from flooded houses.
The flooding in eastern and central Europe was the worst in twenty years. Five in the Czech Republic, seven in Romania, seven in Poland, and five in Austria are among the minimum number of deaths that have occurred. With whole neighborhoods flooded and highways, bridges, and railroad lines ruined, the damage is projected to be in the billions of euros.

Catastrophic Category 4 Storm Engulfs Florida In Flood
Thursday, September 26, 2024 – Hurricane Helene grew to a devastating category 4 hurricane as it approached Florida's Gulf coast, becoming one of the most powerful storms to strike the United States this year. Early Thursday, the storm's greatest sustained winds were about 110 mph, with stronger gusts. Hurricane-force winds stretched up to 60 miles from the storm's core.
The hurricane is predicted to make landfall Thursday night. Forecasters warn that the massive storm may produce a "nightmare" situation, with a potentially life-threatening storm surge reaching 15-20ft (4.6-6.1 meters) in the Big Bend area of Florida's Panhandle.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) expects the storm to cause damage across multiple states. Cities as far north as Asheville, North Carolina, were receiving heavy rain Wednesday night as the storm's farthest edges advanced north. This will be the fourth storm to hit the United States this year. This is the second significant storm to strike the state this year.
