Finally, a light role for Walken. How many times can a person play the same dark, twisted character? His Hill is twisted, but in a satirically cheerful way. As preacher turned mobile-home salesman Bill Hill breaks up a drunken altercation between a married couple, a stranger, Juvenal (Ulrich), appears and with his bloody palms touches the woman, who is blind. Her sight returns, and Hill sees a chance to make a killing. Huckster Hill enlists associate Lynn Faulkner (Fonda) to woo the stigmatic while misogynistic evangelist August Murray (Arnold) tries hard to thwart Hill's efforts to exploit the faith healer. A perfect cast and an appreciation for Leonard's mischievousness make this an impressive dark comedy.
