The man who brought the world Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, writer-director Stephan Elliott, takes a strange curve into scattershot noir with Eye of the Beholder. Ashley Judd plays a serial killer with an extensive wig collection and mysterious motives. A frayed, hallucinating British intelligence officer (Ewan McGregor) stationed in the U.S. spies on her in a cross-country romp, falling into troubled love. He'd turn her in, but she reminds him too much of his young daughter he hasn't seen since his wife left him. Nevermind the fact she's a brutal murdered who slices and dices almost everyone she comes in contact with.
Eye of the Beholder proffers hope of resolving into a delicious tangle of threads and vantages that will then unknot into something worthwhile. Yet it stays perched on the verge of coherency, straining to become a twisty thriller as it loses its breath.
