NCAA Football Bowl Championship 1998: Week 4
Week 4: November 16, 1998
Kansas State was able to beat Nebraska for the first time in 30 years but was not able to move up a single spot in the Bowl Championship Series rankings. The Wildcats, once again ranked third in the BCS rankings, beat the Cornhuskers 40-30 but top-ranked Tennessee's 28-24 comeback win over Arkansas and second-ranked UCLA's 36-24 victory over Washington prevented KSU from moving up in the standings.
Kansas State's relatively weak schedule (ranked 68th in the nation) continues to hurt their chances for a Fiesta Bowl bid. The Wildcats next face Missouri on the road while Tennessee is at home against Kentucky and UCLA hosts Southern Cal. Also, Florida and Florida State will square off in Tallahassee and the loser will be knocked from the short list of possible Fiesta Bowl candidates.
The final BCS standings will be released December 6 and the 1-2 teams will play for the "national championship" in the Fiesta Bowl on January 4, 1999.

PAvg.— The average of the Associated Press media poll and ESPN-USA Today coaches poll. Others receiving votes are calculated in order received.
CAvg.— The average of The Hester & Anderson/Seattle Times, Jeff Sagarin's rankings and New York Times rankings. In order to prevent differences in individual formulas, a maximum adjusted deviation of no greater than 50 percent of the average of the two lowest computer rankings is utilized.
Quartile Rank— Rank of schedule strength compared to other Division I-A teams divided by 25. The component is calculated by determining the cumulative won/loss records of the team's opponent (66.6 percent) and the cumulative won/loss record of the team's opponent's opponents (33.3 percent).
Losses— One point for each loss during the season.
Notes: BCS rankings each week will list the top 15 or down to the lowest-ranked BCS-affiliated conference leader.
