While in police custody, Gibson, in an obscenity-laced, anti-Semitic tirade, said to the police officer who arrested him, “The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” Gibson later apologized and said his remarks were “despicable.” He went further in a second apology, saying “I want to apologize specifically to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words I said to a law enforcement officer.” He pleaded no contest to a charge of drunken driving in August and received a sentence of three years' probation and was required to spend a year in a 12-step program.
