test pilot, became the first civilian to reach space in a privately financed and developed spacecraft. In June Melvill guided SpaceShipOne 62 miles above California, successfully overcoming technical problems that could have proven tragic. The entire flight out of Earth's atmosphere and back down lasted 90 minutes.
