William Henry RYAN, Congress, NY (1860-1939)

RYAN William Henry , a Representative from New York; born in Hopkinton, Middlesex County, Mass., May 10, 1860; moved to Buffalo, N.Y., with his parents in 1866; attended the grade and high schools; engaged in the retail shoe business and later in the general insurance and bonding business; elected to the board of supervisors of Erie County in 1894; reelected in 1897, and served as chairman in 1898; elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-sixth and to the four succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1899-March 3, 1909); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1908; delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1904 and 1924; resumed the insurance and bonding business in Buffalo, N.Y., and also engaged in banking; member of the grade crossing and terminal commission 1919-1939; member of the Allegany State Park Commission 1930-1939; died in Buffalo, N.Y., November 18, 1939; interment in Mount Calvary Cemetery, at Pine Hill, near Buffalo, N.Y.
