Anti-JacksonianSMITH Nathan , a Senator from Connecticut; born in Woodbury, Conn., January 8, 1770; received a modest education; read law; admitted to the bar in 1792 and commenced the practice of his profession in New Haven, Conn.; prosecuting attorney for New Haven County 1817-1835; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1818; unsuccessful candidate for governor of Connecticut in 1825; appointed United States attorney for the district of Connecticut 1828-1829; elected as a Whig to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1833, until his death in Washington, D.C., December 6, 1835; interment in the Grove Street Cemetery, New Haven, Conn.
