Lorenzo BURROWS, Congress, NY (1805-1885)

BURROWS Lorenzo , a Representative from New York; born in Groton, Conn., March 15, 1805; attended the academies at Plainfield, Conn., and Westerly, R.I.; moved to New York and settled in Albion, Orleans County, in 1824; employed as a clerk until 1826, when he engaged in mercantile pursuits; assisted in establishing the Bank of Albion in 1839, and served as cashier; treasurer of Orleans County in 1840; assignee in bankruptcy for Orleans County in 1841; supervisor of the town of Barre in 1845; elected as a Whig to the Thirty-first and Thirty-second Congresses (March 4, 1849-March 3, 1853); comptroller of the State of New York 1855-1857; director and president of the Niagara Falls International Bridge Co.; chosen a regent of the University of New York in 1858 and appointed one of the commissioners of Mount Albion Cemetery in 1862, serving in both of these capacities at the time of his death in Albion, Orleans County, N.Y., March 6, 1885; interment in Mount Albion Cemetery.
