Josiah HASBROUCK, Congress, NY (1755-1821)
HASBROUCK Josiah , a Representative from New York; born in New Paltz, Ulster County, N.Y., March 5, 1755; completed preparatory studies; conducted a general merchandising business; second lieutenant in the Third Regiment of Ulster County Militia in 1780; supervisor of New Paltz 1784-1786, 1793, 1794, and 1799-1805; member of the State assembly 1796, 1797, 1802, and 1806; elected as a Republican to the Eighth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John Cantine and served from April 28, 1803, to March 3, 1805; engaged in agricultural pursuits; elected to the Fifteenth Congress (March 4, 1817-March 3, 1819); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of State (Fifteenth Congress); died near Plattekill, Ulster County, N.Y., March 19, 1821; interment in the family burial ground; reinterment in New Paltz Rural Cemetery, New Paltz, N.Y.
