Joseph Jonathan DAVIS, Congress, NC (1828-1892)

DAVIS Joseph Jonathan , a Representative from North Carolina; born near Louisburg, Franklin County, N.C., April 13, 1828; attended Louisburg Academy, Wake Forest (N.C.) College, and the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va.; was graduated from the law department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1850; was admitted to the bar the same year and practiced in Oxford, N.C., and later in Louisburg, N.C.; served as captain of Company G, Forty-seventh Regiment, Confederate Army, during the Civil War; member of the State house of representatives 1868-1870; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth, Forty-fifth, and Forty-sixth Congresses (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1881); resumed the practice of law; appointed a justice of the State supreme court in 1887, and subsequently elected in 1888; died in Louisburg, N.C., August 7, 1892; interment in Oaklawn Cemetery.
