John Ward HUNTER, Congress, NY (1807-1900)

HUNTER John Ward , a Representative from New York; born in Bedford (now a part of Brooklyn), N.Y., October 15, 1807; received a liberal schooling; clerk in a wholesale grocery store in New York City in 1824; clerk in the United States customhouse at New York City 1831-1836; assistant auditor of the customhouse 1836-1865; engaged in banking as treasurer of the Dime Savings Bank in Brooklyn, New York; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-ninth Congress in a special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative James Humphrey (December 4, 1866-March 3, 1867); censured by the U.S. House of Representatives on January 26, 1867, for the use of unparliamentary language; not a candidate for renomination to the Fortieth Congress in 1866; mayor of Brooklyn, New York, 1875-1876; resumed banking; died on April 16, 1900, in Brooklyn, N.Y.; interment in Greenwood Cemetery.
