John W. BROWN, Congress, NY (1796-1875)

BROWN John W. , a Representative from New York; born in Dundee, Scotland, October 11, 1796; immigrated to the United States in 1802 with his father, who settled in Newburgh, N.Y.; attended the public schools; studied law; was admitted to the New York bar in 1818 and commenced the practice of law in Newburgh, N.Y.; elected justice of the peace in 1820; elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1833-March 3, 1837); resumed the practice of law; elected judge of the supreme court for the second judicial district of New York in 1849; reelected in 1857, and served until 1865; resumed the practice of law; died in Newburgh September 6, 1875; interment in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
