John Ransom BUCK, Congress, CT (1835-1917)

BUCK John Ransom , a Representative from Connecticut; born in Glastonbury, Hartford County, Conn., December 6, 1835; attended the common schools, Wilbraham (Mass.) Academy, and Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn.; taught school; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1862 and practiced in Hartford; assistant clerk of the State house of representatives in 1864 and clerk in 1865; clerk of the senate in 1866; president of the Hartford Court of Common Council in 1868; city attorney 1871-1873; treasurer of Hartford County 1873-1881; member of the State senate in 1880 and 1881; elected as a Republican to the Forty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1881-March 3, 1883); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1882 to the Forty-eighth Congress; elected to the Forty-ninth Congress (March 4, 1885-March 3, 1887); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1886 to the Fiftieth Congress; resumed the practice of law in Hartford, Conn., where he died February 6, 1917; interment in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
