John HARRIS, Congress, NY (1760-1824)
HARRIS John , a Representative from New York; born at Harris Ferry (now Harrisburg), Pa., September 26, 1760; moved to Aurelias (now in Cayuga County), Onondaga County, N.Y., in 1789; operated the first ferry across Cayuga Lake; acted as an Indian interpreter, and opened the first store and tavern in Cayuga County in 1789; appointed a colonel in the New York State Militia in 1806; elected as a Republican to the Tenth Congress (March 4, 1807-March 3, 1809); commanded the One Hundred and Fifty-eighth New York Regiment in the War of 1812; died in Bridgeport, near Seneca Falls, N.Y., in November 1824; interment in the local cemetery.
