Frederick Augustus TALLMADGE, Congress, NY (1792-1869)

TALLMADGE Frederick Augustus , a Representative from New York; born in Litchfield, Conn., August 29, 1792; completed preparatory studies and was graduated from Yale College in 1811; studied law in the Litchfield Law School; was admitted to the bar in 1811 and commenced practice in New York City in 1813; served as captain in the War of 1812; member of the board of aldermen of New York City in 1834; served as common councilman in 1836; member of the State senate 1837-1840, and during the last session served as president pro tempore; recorder of the city of New York 1841-1846; elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth Congress (March 4, 1847-March 3, 1849); was not a candidate for renomination in 1848; again recorder of the city of New York 1848-1851; superintendent of the Metropolitan police 1857-1862; clerk of the New York Court of Appeals 1862-1865; resumed the practice of law in New York City; returned to Litchfield, Conn., in 1869, and died there on September 17, 1869; interment in the East Cemetery.
