Charles Robert HOWELL, Congress, NJ (1904-1973)

HOWELL Charles Robert , a Representative from New Jersey; born in Trenton, Mercer County, N.J., April 23, 1904; attended Trenton public schools and graduated from Hoosac School, Hoosick, N.Y.; student at Princeton University in 1923 and 1924 and took special courses at the University of Pennsylvania in 1936 and 1937; insurance broker in Trenton, N.J., 1928-1954; elected to the New Jersey house of assembly in 1944, reelected in 1945, and served until 1947; elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-first and to the two succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1949-January 3, 1955); was not a candidate for renomination in 1954 but was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the United States Senate; appointed New Jersey State Commissioner of Banking and Insurance in February 1955, serving until March 1, 1969; delegate at large to the Democratic National Convention in 1956; died in Trenton, N.J., July 5, 1973; cremated; ashes scattered at sea off Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.
