William Simon
Age: 72USOC president from 1981-84 and former Treasury secretary and energy expert in President Richard Nixon's administration; USOC vice president and treasurer (1976-80); gave influential speech in support of President Carter's boycott of the 1980 Summer Games; first chairman of the U.S. Olympic Foundation, the financial source for American amateur sports, and a member of the board of trustees until his death; inducted into U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1991; won 1999 Douglas MacArthur Award for his lifetime contributions to the U.S. Olympic movement; headed the Federal Energy Office in 1973; replaced George Shultz as Treasury secretary in 1974. He died of complications from lung disease.
