Age: 84tennis champion who used his attacking backhand stroke to sweep all four major tournaments in 1938, becoming the world's first Grand Slam champion; born John Donald Budge; won Wimbledon, U.S. Nationals and led the U.S. to its first Davis Cup title in 11 years in 1937; won six of eight tournaments he played in and had a 92-match, 14-tournament victory streak in 1938; turned pro in 1939; won Sullivan Award in 1937; AP Male Athlete of the Year 1937 and 1938; inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1964; Tennis Magazine selected him as one of the 20 greatest players of the 20th century; injured in a car accident in Pennsylvania in December 1999. He died of cardiac arrest.
