Age: 77Detroit Tigers Hall of Fame left-hander who won back-to-back MVP awards in 1944 and 1945; a native of Detroit, Newhouser played for his hometown team from 1939-53; won Game 7 of the 1945 World Series; spent two seasons in Cleveland before retiring in 1955 after compiling a 207-150 record and a 3.02 ERA; elected to Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992 and five years later became the fourth player in Tigers history to have his number retired; he spent 20 years in banking before returning to baseball as a scout for the Astros; of a long illness
