- May 4, northern N.M.: A controlled fire set by the National Park Service swept out of control and, over the next few weeks, consumed more than 46,000 acres and 200 residences. Nearby Los Alamos National Laboratory, where the atomic bomb was developed during World War II, sustained only minor damage. The fire was the largest in New Mexico's history.
