- Dec. 16, Tuscaloosa, Ala.: Tornado with winds averaging between 175 and 200 mph ripped through the city along a 12-mile path of destruction, killing 12 people. According to officials it was the deadliest U.S. tornado this year.
- Dec. 25, Luoyang, China: At least 309 people were killed in a fire at a shopping center. Most of the victims had been attending a Christmas party at an unlicensed disco in the building.
