    On this date in 1889, an estimated 2,200 people died in a terrible flood in Johnstown, Pennsylvania when the South Fork Dam failed as a result of heavy rains. A 30-foot-high wall of water rushed through Conemaugh Valley, destroying everything in its path. It is the worst flood tragedy in U.S. history.
