    On this date in 1944, four tornadoes killed a total of 153 people in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The town of Shinnston, West Virginia, was completely flattened. Until this storm it was widely believed that serious tornadoes did not travel across mountainous terrain.
