The U.S. Postal Service reported that 5,581 postal workers were victims of dog bites in fiscal year 2013. Dog bites to postal employees peaked during the mid-1980s when more than 7,000 letter carriers were attacked annually. Through aggressive employee training and public education programs that statistic has dropped over the years.
