2000 Boston Marathon
The 104th edition of the Boston Marathon was held Monday, April 17, 2000 and run, as always, from Hopkinton through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton and Brookline to Boston, Mass. Kenya's Elijah Lagat held on to win the closest Boston Marathon in history by outdueling countryman Moses Tanui and Ethiopian Gezahenge Abera with a time of two hours, nine minutes and 47 seconds. Only three seconds separated the top three finishers.
Kenya's Catherine Ndereba ended Ethiopian Fatuma Roba's three year run as the Boston Marathon's women's champion. Ndereba finished the race in two hours, 26 minutes, and 11 seconds to become the first Kenyan woman to win in Boston.
American Jean Driscoll (2:00:52) took home her eighth women's wheelchair race breaking her tie with Clarence DeMar for most wins in one Boston division. Switzerland's Franz Nietlispach (1:33:32) continued his dominance in the men's wheelchair division by winning his fifth race and fourth in a row. Winners in the men's and women's divisions earned $80,000.
