The 50th World Hockey Championships, held in Helsinki and Turku, Finland from April 26 to May 14, 1997. Top three teams (*) in each group after preliminary round-robin advance to the medal round. Bottom three from each group play in the relegation round. Top two teams from the medal round advance to the best-of-three championship round.
