On September 28, 1998, the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants, each with a regular-season record of 89-73, staged a playoff game to determine the winner of the National League wild card spot. It was the ninth time in baseball history that an extra game was needed as a tie-breaker, and the first time in history that a tiebreaker was needed to determine the wild card winner.
The game was played at Wrigley Field in Chicago due to a coin toss and the Cubs went on to defeat the Giants 5-3 to advance to the Division Series against Atlanta.
