The 13th Pan American Games were held in Winnipeg, Canada from July 23-Aug. 8, 1999. More than 5,000 athletes from 42 countries in North, South and Central America and the Caribbean participated in 41 sports, making it the third-largest multi-sport event ever held in North America (behind the 1984 and 1996 Summer Olympics). The games have been held every four years since 1951.
