Highly regarded actress best noted for her work playing struggling, psychologically damaged characters. She won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her portrayal of Cathryn in Images (1972), about a woman who hallucinates at an airport imagining she sees her old lover who had been killed in a plane crash a number of years earlier. York was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Alice LeBlanc in They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969), the depression-era movie about a sadistic dance marathon. She has also acted in such noted movies as A Man for All Seasons (1966), Battle of Britain (1969), and the TV mini series, Tender is the Night (1985).
