Thomas Petters CARNES, Congress, GA (1762-1822)
CARNES Thomas Petters , a Representative from Georgia; born in Maryland in 1762; completed preparatory studies; studied law; was admitted to the bar and practiced in Milledgeville, Ga.; member of the State house of representatives 1786, 1787, 1789, and 1797; solicitor general for the western circuit of Georgia; attorney general of Georgia from December 1789 until December 1792, when he resigned; elected as an Anti-Administration candidate to the Third Congress (March 4, 1793-March 3, 1795); resumed the practice of law; judge of the western circuit court of Georgia from January 1798 until May 1803, when he resigned, and from December 1809 to November 1810; member of the State constitutional convention in 1798; appointed one of the commissioners to settle the boundary disputes between the States of Georgia and North Carolina in 1806; again a member of the State house of representatives in 1807 and 1808; died on his farm in Franklin (now Hart) County, Ga., May 5, 1822; interment in the garden on his estate.
